Why We Went

Honestly, the massive wooden slide was the only reason we made this stop. I saw pictures and knew my kids would love it, so even if the playground itself hadn’t impressed me, the slide alone was worth the trip.

What We Loved

• The slide itself was wide, fast, and so unique. The park provides burlap sacks to make sliding easier, but you can also bring a towel or blanket from home

• The park sits back far from the main road, which makes it feel safe and private, perfect for a picnic or even a birthday party

• At the bottom of the slide, there’s a sawdust “catch” area to soften landings. My kids thought it was fun, and I appreciated that extra safety step

• I love that something this cool is available at no cost. We stayed about 30–45 minutes

Things to Know Before You Go

• Getting up is tricky: There aren’t stairs. Instead, you climb a slanted path with wooden slats for grip. My 2-year-old needed to be carried up, and it can get hot at the top

• Crowds: It’s a quick, repeat activity (slide down, climb up, repeat), so when it’s busy, it can feel rushed, especially if a party is happening at the pavilion

• Safety: Shoes with a good grip work best. Bare feet = too slippery. Older kids should be patient when little ones need extra time

• Mess factor: Sawdust at the bottom means dusty clothes, so don’t dress the kids in anything new

• Amenities: Parking is gravel, and I didn’t see restrooms or porta-potties marked clearly. Assume minimal facilities and plan ahead

• Playground: The attached playground is colorful but basic. If you want a bigger play space afterward, I recommend heading about 10 minutes up the road to Utica District Park (I’ll cover that in another post)

Mom Tips

• Bring your own towel, blanket, or even an old pillowcase to use instead of the sacks

• Pack water and snacks; benches are right by the slide, which helps take breaks

• Be prepared to climb with toddlers or carry them

• Shoes with grip are a must; bare feet make sliding harder and less safe

• Keep an eye on allergies; sawdust at the bottom can bother sensitive skin

  

  This was definitely a fun, “bucket list” style park stop for us. Even though we only went down four times before the kids were worn out (and I was tired of carrying my littles up the climb!), it was absolutely worth experiencing once.

Why I Went

A friend first told me about this playground, and what stuck with me was that it had poured rubber surfacing and mostly gated minus the main entrance, that immediately caught my attention. I also am familiar with the Lititiz area because I had family who lived out there a few years back. I decided to go and plan to be there around 11 am. I packed up some snacks and ice cold drinks and we took the 45 minute drive.

What I Loved

• Plenty of parking right beside the playground, shared with a nearby school/church

• Bathrooms on-site next to the playground (though not always open)

• Toddler area immediately to the left as you walk in, very spacious with its own swings, poured rubber surface, and lots to do

• Main play area (ages 5–12) has exciting features: a zip line, climbing ropes, climbing wall, enclosed metal slide, stand-and-spin feature, and plenty of swings

• Multiple swing types including a wheelchair-accessible swing

• The safe layout, mostly gated, playground set back from the street, and parking not directly on the main road

• Gave a community vibe feel. The Lancaster moms I met there were so kind and community-focused. I even swapped info about other family spots in the area

Things to Know Before You Go

• Shade is limited. There are a few shady spots and seating areas, but no shaded structures

• Equipment can get hot, especially the rubber surface and the enclosed metal slide on sunny days

• Visibility is tricky. Blind spots exist because of the structures, so it’s harder to watch multiple kids at once

• The best times to is mid-day (11–3) seemed calmer, before the after-school crowd comes

• A seasonal tip: This park may be more enjoyable in cooler weather or on cloudy day

Mom Tips

• If you’ve got multiple littles, it’s easier with two adults (or kids who stick together). The split toddler/big kid sections mean you might be running back and forth

• Bring plenty of water and maybe even hats to manage the sun

• There’s a pavilion near the bathrooms that works great for snacks

• Keep an eye on those brave little explorers, the 5–12 side has areas kids can climb or jump from, depending on their comfort level

Would I Go Again?

Yes! I would definitely return, though ideally with another adult so I can balance keeping an eye on both the toddler side and the bigger structures. The space felt safe, clean, and welcoming, and the variety of play equipment kept my kids busy and happy.

• Lancaster in general has tons of family-friendly activities, so this park can easily be part of a bigger adventure.

Why I Went

I stumbled on this park online, and the second I saw the photos, I got that wave of nostalgia. In my area, most of the big wooden “castle-style” playgrounds have been torn down and replaced with newer models. While that’s fine, I really wanted to experience one more old-school castle-style park like the ones I remember from over 20 years ago.

When I saw Red Dragon Park (tucked right next to Mohnton Park), I knew we had to go. It was close enough for a day trip (about an hour and 10 minutes for me), and the photos showed plenty of shade, a must with little kids.

What I Loved

• The Castle-Style Vibes: This park gave me all the nostalgic feels. Wooden play structures, tire elements, and climbing spaces that reminded me of my childhood

• Shade Everywhere: About 95% of the park is in shade, which made such a difference. Even the slides weren’t hot! The only sunny area was the swing set near the entrance, but the rest was wonderfully cool

• Multiple Play Zones:

  • Red Dragon Park (the first section you reach): Castle-style structure with tanbark, stones, and sand areas. Lots of room to explore, and seating areas nearby

  • Main Mohnton Park (a little further back): Blue, white, and red play structure, smaller and older-looking but still fun.

  • A Tiny Tot Spot with bucket swings, slides, and a spinning seat features slides that sit between Red Dragon and the main Mohton Memorial Park playstructure

• Seating & Tables: Shady picnic tables around the park made it easy to take a break or eat lunch

• Walking Path: A paved, shaded walking loop circles the park, with history markers along the way. It felt safe, quiet, and family-friendly

• Community Feel: The park had a friendly vibe. I even met a mom who shared helpful info, and my kids found playmates quickly

Things to Know Before You Go

• There’s a bathroom near the entrance, but I don’t know if it’s open. There is a handicap-sized porta-potty available right outside of it

• Toward the end of our visit, some bigger kids came and weren’t as mindful of the little ones. Timing your visit earlier in the day might help (we went from 11:15-1:30ish)

• The Red Dragon uses tanbark, stones, and sand in some areas, but I didn’t find sharp edges or bug issues. Mohnton Park’s all tanbark Shade in colder months: Since it’s so shaded, bundle up if you go in cool weather, it might feel extra chilly

Mom Tips

• Bring lunch or snacks; the shaded tables are perfect for a break

• Plan at least 2 hours. My kids played for a solid two hours and could’ve gone longer if older kids hadn’t arrived

• Pair it with another activity nearby. Since it’s a bit of a drive (for me, 1 hr 10 min), I’d plan another stop in the area (The Fire Side Cafe is only 25 minutes away)

• If you have younger kids, the right side of Red Dragon is more open with good sight lines.

• Visit all three play structures. All 3 of mine really did like the tot lot, even though they did not have nearly as much going on as the Red Dragon

Final Thoughts

This park was such a nostalgic, worthwhile find. The shade, castle-style play, and multiple zones gave us variety and comfort. I would absolutely stop here again, especially if I’m already in the area. Even though these old wooden castle parks are disappearing, Red Dragon & Mohnton together gave me the full throwback experience, and my kids loved it just as much as I did. Worth the drive? Absolutely.

Why I Decided to Go

I was driving down I-81 and wanted to explore a new town under an hour away. Jonestown Community Park is about 40 minutes from my home. I decided to check it out solo first, to get a feel for it and see if it would be a good fit to bring my kids later.

What I Loved

• There are 2 different playgrounds. One colorful (purple, green, blue, and gray) at the top, and a more rustic tire-structure style one down the hill

• A variety of sports courts and fields: pickleball/tennis court, volleyball court, baseball field, and open grassy areas

• A stage and concession stand, which makes me think this park could host performances or community events

• Multiple shaded spots throughout both park structures

• A gazebo and a walking path that takes you are the entire park, with three separate parking areas for convenience

• The “wood-like” park down the hill has unique features like a zip line, tic-tac-toe board, and climbing/arm-hanging equipment, and a car that uses real rubber tires as wheels

• Both parks have a clearly labeled 2-5, 5-12 section, which includes swings

  

  Things to Know Before You Go

• Neither of these parks is gated, but they are not by a busy road

• The bathroom under the pavilion near the colorful play structure is not always open. There are bathrooms by the baseball field near the parking lot closest to the Jonestown Community sign

• There is a parking lot by both parks and one near the light blue concession stand

• This park gets more shade in the evenings and early mornings, making it a nice option for a later-in-the-day outing

• When I visited, it wasn’t too busy, just a couple of families with a few kids

• There is a volleyball court with sand near the colorful play structure

• The park does have surveillance

Mom Tips

• If you have younger kids, the colorful playground at the top is the best choice. The bottom tire-structure playground feels more geared toward older kids

• Pack snacks or lunch, this park has lots of shaded picnic-friendly areas and even a gazebo

• Keep in mind bathroom access before you arrive, since only the top bathrooms were reliably open

• This could make a great spot for an evening play session or even catching a community event at the stage

Johnstown Community Park felt safe, family-friendly, and welcoming. I liked the diversity of the families I saw there and the overall laid-back atmosphere. It wasn’t hard to find, and I appreciated how close it is to other spots, only about 12 minutes from Lebanon and Coleman Park (which is another post worth checking out). I’d definitely bring my kids back here, especially for the colorful playground up top, and I can see it being a nice go-to for both daytime play and evening outings.

Why I Went

I actually checked this park out by myself first. From the photos, it looked like it was geared more toward older kids (5–12), and I wanted to confirm before bringing my younger 3. Since my kids aren’t big on bugs and this park sits near trees, it felt like one of those “better check it alone” situations. Sometimes my kids are with me, and sometimes I scout spots solo.

What I Loved

• Lots of open space to run around, so even if my little ones couldn’t use the full structure, they’d still have room to play

• A few toddler-friendly touches: the squirrel rocker toy, swings, and musical features could all work for younger kids with some help

• The zip lines (two of them!) look like so much fun for the 5–12 age group. There’s even a ramp leading up to them

• A Harmony Garden with musical instruments gives the park a unique feel

• Shaded in the evening (5 PM) and probably mornings too, which makes it a comfortable playtime

• The outdoor fireplace and pavilion area felt like neat extras

  Fairville Park is clean, well-kept, and a good choice for older kids who love climbing and zip lines. For my younger ones, it would be more of a supervised, “let’s try a couple of things and then run around” type of outing. I’d probably bring my older two here at some point just to test it out, but it wouldn’t be my main go-to. Still, I like that it offers nature, music, and space all in one place.

Why I Chose to Go

We were looking for a close park that provided a good amount of shade, not too far from the park we were at previously (Skyline Commons Park). This park was less than 5 minutes away, and the Google photo provided some hope for shade, so we went.

What I Loved

• Ample parking (short walk to the play area)

• 2–5 play structure is about 90% shaded (a huge win)

• Musical play features that actually work and keep the kids busy

• Pavilion has a perfect line of sight to both playgrounds (no blind spots)

• Outdoor fitness stations within view of the play areas

• Clean, quiet, safe-feeling park with lots of nature, birdhouses, and shade

• Extra amenities: basketball court, tennis courts, a small skate rink (shares space with basketball courts), and a walking path

Things to Know Before You Go

• Mulch surfacing (not poured rubber)

• Swings for the 2–5 are in full sun, while the 5–12 swings and the tire swing are shaded

• Bathrooms = oversized wheelchair-accessible porta-potty

• Not gated, but play areas are set far back from the road

First Impression

The park is tucked away in a quiet neighborhood, so pay attention to the signs when driving in. It feels calm and peaceful, not crowded or busy.

We love to explore areas over 30 minutes from our home, but I know there are still some local gems, so I wanted to take a little break and look closer to home. The distance from this park to home is 22 minutes! It was a no-brainer. There were pictures on Google, but you know me, I have to explore firsthand!

Why I Chose to Go

From my address, I was looking for parks within a 30-minute drive heading toward Indiantown Gap. A few popped up, and this one was first on the list. I wanted to get the kids out without going too far, so I packed their lunches, loaded them in the car, and off we went. We ended up staying just under two hours.

What I Loved

• All-Inclusive Playground: This park is designed to be accessible for all children and follows the seven principles of inclusive play. That means kids of all abilities can find ways to participate and engage here

• Play areas for multiple ages: There’s a clear 2–5 section and a 5–12 section, but my two-year-olds handled the larger structure surprisingly well (except the climbing structures on the side)

• Swings with variety: Bucket swings (plastic, not rubber), traditional swings, and even a fun “see-saw style” swing for two kids or a kid + parent

• Extras: Walking path, volleyball court, bocce ball pit, tetherball, soccer field, basketball court, tennis courts, and even a smaller secondary play area

• Amenities: Family restrooms (very spacious, clean, and with a changing table), a porta-potty, pavilion restrooms, picnic tables, benches, and a shaded umbrella-style seating area

• Atmosphere: Clean, well-kept, lots of greenery, and absolutely gorgeous mountain views. It wasn’t crowded (only about five families rotating while we were there), which made it peaceful

• Community feel: The area features a gazebo, a small walking bridge, and a community events signboard. They even have Community Park Day scheduled for Sept. 20 (rain date Sept. 21)

Things to Know Before You Go

• The 5-12 age playground isn’t shaded. Trees are around, but they’re not tall enough to cover the structures. It might be best for cooler days

• The 2-5 play structure is closer to the parking lot

• The park is about 70% gated. The gate can be closed near the tether ball, so if you don’t want kids in the sand, that is an easy fix

• There are some blind spots (like the burgundy tunnel slides), so if you have multiple kids, you’ll need to move around a bit to keep an eye on everyone

• Construction is happening in the distance, so you may see construction vehicles around, but it’s not disruptive to the playground

• Ample parking right by the playground

• Restrooms are connected to the pavilion and are easy to access

Mom Tips

• This is a great park for letting kids run free while you still feel at ease, since it’s semi-gated and well laid out

• Pack sunscreen, very little shade on the big structure

• For toddlers: they may surprise you by being able to handle the “big kid” equipment, but you’ll want to help on the climbing walls

• Great spot for picnics, thanks to the pavilion and umbrella seating areas

• Bring balls or sports gear! Between volleyball, soccer, bocce, and basketball, there are plenty of options beyond the playground

• If you have multiple littles, plan to walk around a bit since there are a couple of quick blind spots

• Bonus: keep your eyes open for upcoming community events. It looks like this park is a hub for local gatherings

Why I Chose to Go

I added this on the way to one of our new favorite parks in Lancaster County (Salunga Park). I always like to check what parks are within a 5-10 minute drive of the “main attraction” park, and this was only 10 or so minutes away.

What I Loved

• Two separate playgrounds: one for ages 2–5 and another for 5–12

• Both playgrounds had swings and plenty of seating

• Rubber surfacing (less worry about falls)

• Pavilion with tables right between the two play areas

• Zip line with rubber landing surface about 30–40 feet long (you will see it to the left when you drive in)

• Bonus play area by the red barn with a climbing structure

• You can drive right up to the park, and if you have older kids (8 and up), you could see them from the car

• Safe, quiet neighborhood

• Friendly moms and families, nice atmosphere

• Quick to get to just a few minutes off the highway

• No big bug issues when I went

• Well-maintained, even though the park is not sanitized

  

  Things to Know Before You Go

  • Not fully gated:

    • The toddler side has a partial gate (open entrance)

    • The bigger kid side has a fence blocking the roadside, but the back is open

  • Some equipment was taped off/broken when I visited (cones and caution tape on certain features)

  • Not a shaded park

  • Concrete walkway runs between the two playgrounds, so watch little ones if they fall

  • Best for toddlers through maybe 8 years old; only a couple of pieces fit older kids

  • Both playgrounds are pretty close together, so it’s manageable to keep an eye on siblings

  • The park is not sanitized

  • They do have a bathroom. It is the building with the bright yellow doors. Not sure how clean they are. They are also not right by the park, but a short walk, and you can see them from the park

    

    Mom Tips

    • Bring extra ball activities for the grass area if your kids get bored quickly

    • A stroller is handy, and there’s a walking path if you want to extend your time

    • Go earlier in the day or bring hats/water if it’s sunny

    • Bring a blanket or chair to sit under the trees with shade by the 5-12 side of the park structure

    • The pavilion is great for a snack break, but it doesn’t have kid-sized tables

    • Since the bathrooms are not immediately right by the park, you may want to go prior to the play area.

      

      Final Thoughts

      Would I go back? Yes. This is a clean, quiet park that’s easy to access, has rubber flooring, swings on both sides, and that awesome zip line. It’s about 35–40 minutes from me, but it's worth it for a simple afternoon outing.

Why I Chose to Go

I first learned about Musser Park through a Lancaster mom’s group I joined last fall. When our program wrapped up in April, many of us wanted to stay connected, so we picked a few local parks to rotate for summer meet-ups, and Musser made the list. Even though I drive by it often, it’s not the kind of spot where you can “hop out for quick photos,” so this time I made it a point to go back without my kids, get better pictures, and capture the vibe.

First Impression

Musser Park has a city-park feel while still being family-friendly and safe. It’s not huge, but it’s gated (except for two small entrances) and easy to keep an eye on the kids. The playground flooring is rubber tiles, always a win for me. There are benches all around the play space, and the equipment is split for ages 2–5 and 5–12, though my littles bounce between both since they follow their older siblings’ lead.

Something unique here is the swing set placement. It’s in the middle of the playground. I don’t see that often, and it’s something to keep in mind when supervising multiple kids.

Things to Know Before You Go

• No bathrooms or pavilion on site. You’ll need to plan for a nearby fast-food stop or restaurant if littles need a potty break

• Street parking only, but I’ve never struggled to find a spot

• No shade on the playground, so pack sunscreen, hats, or plan a shorter stay in the summer heat

• There are sometimes homeless individuals around the park (not directly outside). From my experience, Lancaster’s homeless community tends to keep to themselves and respect the park, but it’s something to be aware of

• During the school year, I noticed groups of kids (around 10 per group) being brought here before noon. If you’d rather avoid the crowd, afternoons tend to be quieter

Mom Tips

• Try to park as close as you can for quick bathroom runs

• Bring sanitizer or wipes if you plan to snack on the benches

• If you want to make this a day-out spot, pair it with the Lancaster Science Factory (literally 3 minutes away). If the Science Factory is busy or you want extra play before heading home, Musser makes the perfect add-on

  

  Overall Impression

  Musser Park is a great city playground that feels safe and manageable with multiple kids. It’s definitely one I’ll keep in rotation, especially since it connects to other mom-approved Lancaster spots. The atmosphere is community-minded. The moms I’ve met here look out for each other without even having to say much, which makes the space feel even more welcoming.

  Would we come back? Absolutely. This is the kind of park that works for a quick afternoon outing, a mom meet-up, or as part of a bigger Lancaster day trip.

Why I Decided to Go

Sulanga Park has been on my Lancaster-area park list for a while. I’ve been looking for playgrounds that check certain boxes: gated, shaded, soft flooring, and ideally not overly busy. I remembered seeing this park on Instagram and thought my kids would love the big truck feature in the middle.

I also suspected it might be on the smaller side, so I wanted to see for myself. It’s only a 42-minute drive from my house, which made it the perfect weekday outing distance.

Things We Loved

• Clean + Fresh Feel: No trash anywhere. The bathrooms were stocked, ventilated, and bug-free (a win in my book). The whole park just felt well-kept

• Ample Parking: You can park literally right next to the gated entrance, and there are multiple spots including shaded ones if you don’t want to park in the sun

• Not Crowded: During our hour-and-a-half visit, we only saw one family leaving as we arrived, and one parent/child coming as we left. It gave us that rare “almost private park” vibe. • Play Variety: A burgundy play structure with slides, a truck climber in the center, and multiple swing types (regular, bucket, and a newer over-the-head style)

• Family-Friendly Seating: Plenty of long benches and even a pavilion nearby,perfect for snack breaks

Things to Know Before You Go

• The playground is fenced in, which I love, but the truck climber does create a small blind spot if you’re watching kids on both the swings and the play structure

• Tire shred flooring. Great for toddlers and bigger kids, but crawlers might try to put it in their mouths. My kids loved taking their shoes off and running barefoot

• You cannot use the big green dumpster right by the park (tempting, I know). Instead, the bathroom is usually open and has a trash can right inside for small items

• “Play at your own risk” signs posted

• A baseball field and grassy areas are right next to the playground if your kids need room to run

    Sulanga Park might be small, but it has so much going for it: clean, shaded, gated, and peaceful. My kids were happily entertained for over an hour, and it felt like a safe, easy park to relax at.

    This one is absolutely going on our repeat list, especially for days when I want a shorter drive, a quieter vibe, and a spot that’s low-stress for both me and the kids.

Why I Went

I was originally trying to scope out Kerr Park (an all-abilities playground less than 10 minutes away) and thought, “Let me see what else is nearby.” Bell Tavern Park wasn’t even on my radar, but when the GPS indicated it was just a quick drive up the road and in the direction towards home, I decided to check it out, and I’m glad I did.

What I Loved

• The park feels beautifully tucked away. The parking lot sits quietly at the back, giving it a calm, hidden vibe

• Clean, spacious parking and a short walk to the playground pulled me in immediately

• Picnic setup is thoughtful, round table clusters with built-in mini benches under trees

• All regular benches had an umbrella-style covering

• Two bathrooms right by the park (one on the left and one on the right side)

• The splash pad is the first thing you arrive at, and there is a bench with shade close by

• They had a volleyball court (sand) really close to the park (bring the sand toys)

• Shade was decent by late afternoon (I was there around 5:30 pm), but the toddler/play section takes sunlight much longer

• Safe vibes: no gate, but the layout and sightlines mean you can see everything

• The swings had ample shade (at least they did when I was there)

• No bugs or gnats

• Clean and maintained

• The 3 playground structures make it easy to choose based on age. The smaller section for 2 and under is set further back than the rubber surface play structures. The main playground has the 2-5 and 5-12 easily identifiable

• Bonus amusements: basketball courts, grassy areas, and on the day I went, an ice cream truck rolled by. Keep your eyes peeled or pack your own treats for yourself

Things to Know Before You Go

• The 2-5 playground structure gets a lot of sun, plan accordingly with sunscreen or quick shade stops

• No gate, but the layout feels peaceful and safe for watching littles

• Splash pad is seasonal (Memorial Day through Labor Day, roughly 8 AM–7 PM)

• The splash pad is going to be what the kids see first. If you don’t want them to get wet or play in it, then this may not be the park for you

• Since the 2 and under section is closer to the road, keep that in mind

• The splash pad is motion-activated, so as long as the kids are moving, it will stay activated

  

  Mom Tips

• Bring water shoes for the splash pad and a towel for post-play drips

• In the picture above, the black is also rubber bricks. Only the splash pad surface is cement

• Pack snacks or lunch, you’ll find plenty of shaded seating under those umbrella benches

• Hats or light clothing are key for the sunny toddler zone

  

  This isn’t just a detour spot. It could be a favorite. On my visit, I was by myself, but I can already picture how much the kids would spread out, discover, run, and happily splash. No tantrums, no hazards, just joyful exploration, and that feels like exactly what a park should be.

I wanted a park within 10 minutes of Storyville (located at the Rosedale Library) in case we needed a backup plan. Rosedale Park is just 7 minutes away which is perfect if Storyville is too busy, overstimulating, or if you simply want to extend your day with more play.

What I Loved

• Tucked away behind a neighborhood, giving it a safe, set-back feel while still being easy to find

• Clear layout: left side for ages 2–5, right side for ages 5–12. My toddlers stuck to the bigger side with their 4-year-old sister, and the super-wide slide was a favorite, all three could slide down together safely

• Two separate swing sets (one by the toddler side, one further back)

• Plenty of pavilions (4–5 nearby) and picnic tables for snacks or breaks

• Wide open grassy space plus a sandbox with diggers

• Fun climbing features, including a rock wall/slide combo and log balance elements

• Bathrooms available (though I didn’t check if they were open or how clean)

• Not crowded when we visited 1 family with 5 kids or so

  No that I have visited this park I will keep it on the list to visit again. There are a few other parks in the area to try so when I do, I can decide if this one stays at the top of the list. I if find one that is gated or has rubber flooring, I am sure that one will be our first choice when we are in that area. The kids (3 littler ones) seemed enjoy themselves even though it was a short visit. They enjoyed the play structure so much they didn’t ask me to push them on the swing which has kind of been their new thing. I love that they love the swings, but it also turns into a cardio workout some days.

Brightbill used to be one of those parks we overlooked. Over ten years ago, it was just a tanbark playground with nothing that wowed me. I had no clue until earlier this year. One day in early spring, we decided to try something different from our usual (Susquehanna Veterans Park), and I was so pleasantly surprised. We were looking for more playgrounds with soft or rubber surfaces, and this one had exactly that. We ended up visiting once or twice a week in the mornings. Since school was in session, it was quiet and perfect for play. The color scheme (blues and greens) instantly made it feel calming and cool.

What We Loved

• Loved the variety, including those rolling “belt” style slides, not your average playground setup

Kish Park popped up, and even though the Google photos didn’t wow me, something about the name and location kept pulling me in. So we went, and I’m happy we did! • It’s not fenced, we had no issue with our kids staying close, especially with the bright playground pulling their attention

• The creek is not too far from the park, so if you have a water-loving toddler, it might be helpful to prep them or keep an extra eye out

• The bathrooms before the park may be locked (they were for us). The porta-potties were not in the best shape. We ended up using the restroom at the Arby’s nearby

• There’s a dog park right at the entrance, which is a nice bonus if you’re bringing a furry friend

• The drive to the back of the park is a little narrow in spots, just go slow and take turns if needed

• We saw signs that hint at other activities or maybe a small store on-site, but nothing was open during our visit

  

  Mom Tips

• Skipping the sandals, sneakers, or water-safe shoes will help your kiddos handle the terrain better

• Bring wipes or hand sanitizer in case bathrooms are closed or too messy

• This is a perfect pit stop park, maybe not worth a huge detour, but a great option if you’re already in the area or driving through Mifflin County

• Because it’s a one-way-in, one-way-out park, it’s easier to keep track of kids and traffic flow

• The setup is great if you’ve got mixed ages: your big kids can climb and rope-walk, while your toddlers can swing or enjoy the gentler play gear nearby

Why We Went

Kids Kingdom is one of those parks I kept seeing float around online, but I couldn’t tell if it would be a true hit for my toddlers just from pictures. So I filed it away in my mind as a “next time I’m in York” spot, and this time, I finally made it happen. It also happened to be not too far from another park I wanted to check out, so it felt like a good day for a double feature. It wasn’t sunny, and I went around lunchtime, so I doubted it would be crowded, perfect timing to explore without the chaos.

What We Loved

• Tucked far back from the main road, giving a peaceful, safe feel

• About 90% gated, with only the main entrance open

• Rubber cushion flooring throughout most of the park; mulch only around the swing area

• Designed for ages 2 to 12, with clear distinctions between younger and older kid zones (left although connect you can tell was designed for littles

• Ramp access helps little ones transition to the bigger side gradually

• Lots of seating options, some naturally shaded by trees, and a gazebo

• Open visibility across most of the park with minimal blind spots

• The playground wasn’t crowded or buggy during our visit

• Bathrooms within clear sight of the playground

• Family restroom available

• Pavilion with shade located between the park and the bathroom

• Under security/surveillance, with a police station near the park entrance

• Sports courts nearby. Great for older siblings and still within view

• Large open field behind the pavilion for free play or running

• Bright and cheerful color scheme on the equipment

• Tables inside the play area allow easy picnic setups without leaving the space

• Plenty of stroller and wagon-friendly space throughout

• Feels like a safe, calm park. I’d return to

  

  Things to Know Before You Go

• One section of the playground was roped off with cones and tape. Unclear what the issue was, but it was well-marked

• Bathrooms are located at the community building before you reach the park (shared parking lot). The men’s and women’s doors are right next to each other

• There is a family restroom on the same side as the men's and women's bathrooms

• Bathrooms have a camera that gives access to the exterior entry

• Bathrooms can be accessed from the community room and from outside the building (this entrance faces the pavilion)

• Bathrooms are clean, have 4 stalls, 2 sinks, a changing table, and 2 air dryers only for hand drying

• Long row of parking spaces before reaching the Kids Kingdom area; parking is plentiful but slightly spread out

• While this visit was quiet, hot sunny days may heat slides and swing seats, worth a quick surface check

• There is shaded seating, but minimal

  

  Mom Tips

• If possible, do a quick bathroom trip before the kids get into full play mode. It’s close, but might save a meltdown

• Great spot for wagon/stroller use, no major obstacles or terrain issues

• Ideal for packing a lunch or snack, plenty of picnic tables within the gated area

• Saturdays between 12–3 p.m. seem like a lower-traffic window for a quieter visit

• Keep sunscreen and bug spray on hand for longer visits, even if bugs weren’t an issue on this cloudy day

• You can let older kids check out the nearby courts while still supervising younger ones in the play zone

  

  Nearby Park Alternatives

• Near the beginning of the park (Timbark Drive entrance), there’s a much smaller playground. Very simple setup with a slide, a couple of features geared toward ages 2 to 5. There is a pavilion, and it feels especially safe and quiet. Good alternative if Kids Kingdom feels overwhelming for younger toddlers or babies.
