Why We Went
Brightbill used to be one of those parks we overlooked. Over ten years ago, it was just a tanbark playground with nothing that wowed me. I had no clue until earlier this year. One day in early spring, we decided to try something different from our usual (Susquehanna Veterans Park), and I was so pleasantly surprised. We were looking for more playgrounds with soft or rubber surfaces, and this one had exactly that. We ended up visiting once or twice a week in the mornings. Since school was in session, it was quiet and perfect for play. The color scheme (blues and greens) instantly made it feel calming and cool.
What We Loved
Soft Rubber Surfacing
Loved the variety, including those rolling “belt” style slides, not your average playground setup
There’s a clear difference between the 2– 5 and 5– 12 age zones, but most kids can safely try both. My littles could handle even the tall slides with supervision
Long play structures with plenty of walkways, spinners, musical elements, and creative sensory toys
A small hill leads from the parking lot down to the playground, so little legs aren’t likely to dart off quickly. It’s not gated, but there’s still a sense of security
One-way in and out with a long lot. Easy to find a space and a short walk to the playground
Tables are located in the middle, shaded areas are available, a pavilion is situated to the right of the playground, and cement paths and benches are available throughout. Easy stroller access
Partially shaded, especially in the back section of the park. This makes a huge difference depending on the time of day
Basketball Courts & Fields: Great for older kids. Plus, you can find walking paths, a wooded trail with a small bridge, and baseball fields
Even with summer camps and local use, this park rarely feels crowded. Never overwhelming even with my four kids
Moms tend to look out for other moms. It’s not cliquey, and I’ve always felt comfortable managing multiple kiddos
Things to Know Before You Go
Litter Alert: Occasionally, you’ll see bottle caps, wrappers, or cans, maybe 10% of the time. Not the norm, but enough to mention for crawlers or curious toddlers. There are trash cans, so it’s more about poor user habits
Not Gated: There are a couple of areas (especially near the smaller structure and trail opening) where kids could wander off if unsupervised
During the summer, it’s used by local camps from around 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. On some days (like Tuesdays and Fridays), they leave for pool trips or field trips, so it’s quieter again after that
Bathrooms are available and are a short walk from the play area. You may need to drive or walk a bit, depending on where you park
Play at Your Own Risk: Some features like the climbing structures or seesaw with the quirky seat design require a bit more attention, especially for smaller kids
Bugs & Grass: It’s usually not buggy, but if they’re mowing or the weather’s humid, the bugs can come out. Might be worth calling Parks & Rec about mowing days if you’ve got allergies or sensory-sensitive kids
If you’ve got a little one who loves balls or loud sounds, the basketball court may be a distraction or safety concern
Mom Tips
Try parking by the bathroom first, especially helpful if you’re potty training, saves you from scrambling mid-play
Bring plenty of water: Even in the shade, it can get hot. Plan for hydration and sunscreen
Best Times to Visit: Weekday mornings (8–11 a.m.) are perfect, especially during the school year or on summer Tuesdays and Fridays when camps are off-site
Expect Evening Crowds: After 5 p.m., expect more traffic from basketball, practices, and sports activities. It can make it harder to keep an eye on multiple kids
Pack Light but Smart: Keep hand wipes, a small trash bag, and band-aids in your bag, especially if your child still puts things in their mouth
Let Older Kids Explore Nearby Trails: If they’re old enough, the little nature path with a bridge is a great “mini adventure” while still keeping them nearby
